Reports 2009-2010

WWT Welney Saturday 28th November

We were fortunate that, after the heavy rains throughout the country, Welney was not flooded. In fact the water levels were quite low.

For the number of birds seen, this was not one of our better days at this reserve. There were no Bewick’s swans on the reserve as they were out feeding in the surrounding fields. They only use the reserve as a night roost, leaving early in the morning.

We did however see four raptors; marsh harrier, buzzard, sparrowhawk and kestrel. There were many whooper & mute Swans. The ducks present were overshadowed by the many handsome male pintails.

There were very few waders, lapwings being the most numerous. We also saw one curlew, twp snipe and four black tailed godwit.

The benefit of Welney is the heated hide that overlooks the floodlit area where the wildfowl are fed.

Whilst in this hide a skein of pink-footed geese flew overhead with a snow goose near the front.

Apparently these have been in the area for some time.

It seems a shame that the reserve does not open until ten o’clock as I am sure that we would see many more species in the early morning.
